The International Centre for Heat and Mass Transfer (ICHMT) is pleased to announce

The 8th International Symposium on Radiative Transfer, RAD-16

in Cappadocia, Turkey, during 6 - 10 June 2016.

 

 OBJECTIVE

 The 8th International Symposium on Radiative Transfer will be held in Ortahisar, Cappadocia, a resort place in the middle of Anatolia, near the cities Nevsehir and Kayseri. Radiation 2016 is built on the success of seven previous meetings held in Kusadasi, 1995, 1997, in Antalya, 2001, in Istanbul, 2004, in Bodrum, 2007, in Antalya, 2010 and in Kusadasi, 2013. As before, the main objective of the Symposium is to bring together scientists and engineers involved in radiative transfer research and to provide a relaxed atmosphere for in-depth discussion of theory, experiments, and applications.

CONFERENCE TOPICS

A wide range of topics related to classical and emerging areas of radiative transfer and their applications will be covered, including:

- Novel numerical, analytical and hybrid techniques for the solution of radiation transfer equation in multidimensional and complex geometries.

- Radiative transfer in optically complex media (anisotropic properties, graded index, etc.)

- Advanced radiative transfer models for industrial and combustion system including furnaces, IC engines, gas turbines.

- Radiative properties of gases, particles, agglomerates and non-homogenous structures;

- Interaction of radiation with conduction, convection, turbulence, chemical kinetics, and soot formation.

- Inverse solution techniques in radiation applications.

- Innovative application of radiative transfer for improved manufacturing processes.

- Fundamentals and applications of radiative transfer to remote sensing.

- Radiative transfer in atmospheres and oceans.

- Biomedical applications of radiation transfer

- Nano- and micro-scale radiative transfer.

- Radiative transfer-based diagnostic systems.

Biographies

  • After graduating as BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering at the Seoul National University, Professor Seung Wook Baek earned a PhD in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan in 1985. He joined the academic staff of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in Daejeon, South Korea, first as assistant and associated professor, before being appointed as full professor in 1994. He also served as guest researchers at the National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST) and the Naval Research Laboratory in the USA. Professor Baek has made outstanding contributions in several areas related to radiation transport. He has authored more than 200 journal papers, many of them being related to radiative transfer in combustion systems. Professor Baek is a Senior Member of the AIAA and member of many learned societies in his country.
  • Dr Anouar Soufiani graduated from the French engineering school Ecole Centrale Paris (1980) and received his Doctorat ès Sciences in molecular physics from Orsay University (1987). Currently, he is senior research scientist at Centre National de la Recherche Scienfique (CNRS), France, and professor in charge of courses at Ecole Centrale Paris. His research interests cover spectral properties of high temperature gases and plasmas, radiative transfer and interactions in turbulent flows, in combusting and in non-equilibrium reacting systems, with applications to energy, environment, aeronautics and aerospace engineering. His teaching courses are related to heat transfer, instabilities and turbulence, statistical physics, and numerical methods. Dr. Soufiani has founded and directed the Francilian research Federation of Heat and Mass Transfer and served since 2003 as Associate Editor of J. Heat Mass Transfer and Int. Comm. Heat Mass Transfer. He authored or co-authored about 150 peer-reviewed journal papers, conference proceedings, and book chapters, and has supervised 22 PhD students. His research was widely disseminated in the academic community but also in the industry through about 40 research grants.

Biographies

  • Professor Pinar Mengüç has completed his BS and M.S. degrees at the Middle East Technical University (METU), in Ankara, Turkey. He has received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University, Indiana, USA in 1985. He joined the faculty at the University of Kentucky the same year, and was promoted to the ranks of associate and full professor in 1988 and 1993, respectively. Professor Mengüç served as an Associate Technical Editor of the ASME Journal of Heat Transfer, and is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer. He has organized five international symposia on Radiation Transfer, which were held in 1995, 1997, 2001, 2004, and 2007. He authored/coauthored more than 110 refereed journal articles and more than 150 conference papers, several book chapters and two books, including the Sixth Edition of Thermal Radiation Heat Transfer, with Jack Howell and Robert Siegel, to appear in 2015. He has four assigned and two pending patents. He has guided more than 60 MS and Ph.D. students and post-doctoral fellows. Since early 2009, he is at Ozyegin University in Istanbul as the founding Director of Center for Energy, Environment, and Economy, and the founding Head of Mechanical Engineering Program. He is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the International Center for Heat and Mass Transfer, and a Senior Member of Optical Society of America. In 2010, the Sixth International Symposium on Radiation Transfer was dedicated to him along with two other researchers. In 2010 he became the Turkish Delegate to European Framework programs (FP-7, and now Horizon 2020) on energy related topics. Since 2012, he is also serving as a contact point between NSF and TUBITAK in Turkey. His team at OzU has 18 students, 2 architects and more than 3,5M$ research grants, mostly on sustainable energy and energy harvesting related areas.

  • Professor Wojciech Lipiński received his MSc Eng degree from Warsaw University of Technology (2000), and doctorate (2004) and habilitation (2009) from ETH Zurich. Currently, he is Professor and the Leader of the Solar Thermal Group at the Australian National University, and a Privatdozent at ETH Zurich. He previously held positions of Senior Research Associate and University Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at ETH Zurich, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota, and Associate Professor at the Australian National University. His research interests are in thermal science, thermochemistry, applied optics, and applications to energy, environmental, biomedical and space engineering. W. Lipiński has published over 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings, and contributed to several books, edited books and e-books. He was awarded the 2006 Hilti Award for Innovative Research from ETH Zurich, the College of Science and Engineering 2010–2011 Outstanding Professor Award from the University of Minnesota, and the 2013 Elsevier/JQSRT Raymond Viskanta Award in Radiative Transfer. He currently holds the Future Fellowship by the Australian Research Council. He has served as an Associate Editor in Bioconversion and Solar Chemistry for the ASME Journal of Solar Energy Engineering since 2011, and a Member of the Editorial Board for Computational Thermal Sciences since 2015. He is an Elected Member of the Scientific Council of the International Centre for Heat and Mass Transfer and an Elected Senior Member of the Optical Society of America. W. Lipiński is also a member of AAAS, ACS, AIChE, ASME, EPS, ISES, and AIAA.

REGISTRATION

The symposium registration fees will be 500 Euros if paid before May 1st, 2016; 600 Euros for advance registration after that date and 700 Euros on-site. This will cover participation in all technical sessions, a welcome reception and the Proceedings.

Full-time students will pay 150 Euros, subject to proof of status, before May 1st, 2016; 200 Euros for advance registration after that date and 250 Euros on-site.

Some financial support will be available for students and young researchers from the developing countries, and to others with demonstrated financial difficulties. Application should be made via the website. Please check ICHMT Grants page.

PRESENTATIONS & PUBLICATIONS

The Symposium will have both stand-up presentations of contributed papers and poster presentations.

Contributed papers are limited to maximum 8 pages and must clearly state the purpose, the findings and the originality of their contribution. Acceptance for oral presentations will be based on the review of these texts. Accepted papers will be published by Begell House, Inc., in a proceedings volume and will be available in the form of flash memory disks to the participants at the registration.

After the conference, authors of contributed papers will have the opportunity to submit an improved/enhanced version of their text, still based on their presentation content. These submissions will be considered for publication in a special issue of the Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer, after going through a new review process.

The Symposium will also include poster sessions to allow the researchers to discuss their most recent works in a relaxed atmosphere. Selection for the poster session will be based on one- page abstracts only. No further text is required for the posters. 

All authors are expected to send their contributed papers or abstracts (for posters) in camera-ready format (in pdf and as a MS-Word document) electronically. The guidelines for preparing camera-ready papers can be found on the Web pages of the Symposium, http://www.ichmt.org/rad-16.

GUIDE FOR AUTHORS

Manuscripts must be submitted in electronic form in PDF format, using either A4 size (210 ´ 297 mm) or quarto (8½  ´ 11 inch).  Any word processing utility (e.g., MS Word, OpenOffice, LaTeX) may be used to generate the manuscript provided that it is converted to PDF for submission. The symposium organizing committee has prepared and made available this template in MS Word.  Those choosing to use other word processing platforms are responsible for generating their manuscript using this template as model and in the format prescribed in this document.  The text should be single-spaced. If superscripts or subscripts make this a problem, wider spacing may be necessary. Leave double spaces between paragraphs. Begin paragraphs flush at the left margin without indentation.  The typing area of all pages should be 170 x 257 mm, whichever size of paper is used, with equal margins on left and right.  Each page should be completely filled with typing and/or diagrams (except perhaps the last page).  Authors should use Times or Times New Roman, 12-point font for the text. The authors must assure that all symbols and equations will be correctly displayed in the PDF version. The text should be left and right justified. The total length of a paper, including all figures, tables and references, should be no more than 8 pages for contributed papers. Manuscripts are therefore expected to provide a very concise description of the work being presented. They however must clearly state the purpose, the methodology, the main results and the originality of the study.

CITY TOURS

 

Legend Tour ( Full day- 09:30-17:00 )  

Our first real encounter with Cappadocia’s almost Martian landscape is in the Dervent valley, where the rock formations are amazing. A walk through the Zelve Open Air Museum is a journey into the past, with its troglodyte houses. This is one of the earliest inhabited and latest abandoned monastic settlements in Cappadocia. After Zelve we visit Pasabag’s “fairy chimneys”, where the voice of the wind harmonises with the songs of the fairies. From here we pause at Avanos, a centre of terracotta art since 3,000 BC, for a demonstration in a traditional pottery workshop. After lunch in Avanos, we visit the famous Goreme Open Air Museum to see the best examples of Byzantine art in Cappadocia.. These are found in rock-cut churches with frescoes and paintings dating from as early as the 10th century. We complete the tour with a visit to the Uchisar Rock-Castle, giving you a panoramic view of the valleys of Cappadocia.

 Mirage Tour ( Full day-09:30-17:00 )

The tour begins with a descent towards the centre of the earth, with a trip to the underground city of Kaymakli; one of the largest and deepest of Cappadocia’s many such settlements. From here we drive to Ihlara canyon, walking through the canyon via the Steps of Anatolia to Belisirma village, the ancient Peristrema. Set by the Melendiz River this is known as the “Valley of the Sky”. Churches carved from the rocks form a gallery of early paintings that are remarkable for their accuracy. We lunch in Belisirma at a local restaurant by the river. On the way to the Caravanserai of Agzikarahan, we visit the beautiful village of Selime. Agzikarahan is a very fine example of the Turkish Seljuk art, built in the early 13th century on the legendary Silk Road, for the accommodation of the traders and their camels.

Dream Tour ( Full day - 09:30-17:00 )

Meet your guide & car and drive to Soğanlı. Visit to Soğanlı Valley that is an Open Air Museum in a wild natural setting near a typical Cappadocian village with its different style Rock-Cut churches and frescoes. Villages in the valleys, surrounded by the “table top” mountains, are spectacular. Keşlik Monastery, near Cemil village, hides its frescoes behind a very thin smoke layer which we can only see by torch light. The Medrese (Theological School) from Seljuk Turks in Taşkınpaşa is the witness of an early and rich Turkish settlement in the town. Visit to Mustafapaşa (Sinassos), an ancient Greek town with its spectacular old Greek houses: very fine examples of late Greek settlements and architecture. Lunch will be in one of them. After lunch drive to Red Valley. Walking for about 4 km in one of the most attractive valleys of Cappadocia: Red Valley, with its fabulous volcanic rock formations, is in the heart of Cappadocia but away from the tourist crowd. Rock-Cut hermit churches with frescoes and paintings fit with the Valley’s meditative atmosphere, remained intact since the beginning.

Walking tour ( Half day-2,5 hours )

Horse Back Riding ( 2 Hours )

Most guests find our 2- or 4-hour rides are the best to enjoy the beautiful unique Cappadocian landscape. With our tour guide, you will discover "Swords Valley" in which there are so many fairy chimneys and rock formations. You will visit the famous "Rose and Red" valleys and our guide will give you some free-time enough to take photos. You will witness how the early people used to live inside the caves by visiting "Cavusin" (Ghost Village). After visit of Cavusin, riding through “White Valley”, you will go to “Love Valley” which is one of the popular valleys in Cappadocia and draws most of attention with interesting shapes of fairy chimneys. After having a free-time in Love Valley, you will come back to “Goreme” and finish the tour.

Balloon Tour ( 1 Hour )

The tour starts at 04:30 a.m. in early morning and finishes at 08:00 a.m. First, breakfast is served and then everybody moves to departure area of the balloons. The balloon is inflated with the help of everyone and the tour starts immediately after the inflation of the balloon. The tour takes about 1 hour and the balloon lands. After landing, there comes a celebration (including champagne) and guests return to the hotel.

ICHMT GRANTS

The Executive Committee of ICHMT will be able to offer some financial support to assist scientists and engineers to participate in its symposia. Priority will be given to students and to scientists early in their career from the Developing Countries.


Grants will normally cover the registration fee and not more than 50% of the other costs.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT ICHMT

The International Centre for Heat and Mass Transfer (ICHMT) is an international, professional, non-governmental, non-profit organization. The general objective of the Centre is to promote and to foster international cooperation in the science of heat and mass transfer and its applications. Its secretariat is located at the Mechanical Engineering Department of Middle East Technical University (METU).

The first meeting of the International Centre for Heat and Mass Transfer (ICHMT) was held in Herceg Novi, Yugoslavia, on September 16, 1968, during the International Seminar on Heat and Mass Transfer in Turbulent Boundary Layers, organized by the Boris Kidric at the Institute of Nuclear Sciences in Belgrade. This meeting was the culmination of activities initiated by a group of leading scientists in the field from different countries. These activities resulted from a long felt need to create an international organization in the fast growing field of heat and mass transfer. Some of the most prominent names in the field who were involved in the founding and creation of the Centre were: E.A. Brun, E.R.G. Eckert, U. Grigull, J.P. Hartnett, T.F. Irvine, Jr., S.S. Kutateladze, A.V. Luikov, W.M. Rohsenow, D.B. Spalding, and M.A. Styrikovich. The active participation and efforts of D. Velickovic, Z. Zaric and N. Afgan from the Serbian Academy of Sciences and the Boris Kidric Institute of Nuclear Sciences in Belgrade made the founding of the Centre possible.

 

The leadership and initiatives of Professor Zoran Zaric and later Professor Naim Afgan made the Centre grow and reach maturity over the years and become a well-known organizer of meetings and other activities with high prestige among scientists and researchers in the field of heat and mass transfer. The meetings have served as a means of conveying and transferring scientific knowledge, technical know-how, and cultural values. The Centre's many publications have become among the most sought after collections of scientific literature in the field.

 

The Secretariat of the Centre remained in Belgrade for almost 24 years and traditionally organized one seminar and one symposium a year, usually in Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia, until early 1990s when the start of the political turmoil in former Yugoslavia unavoidably hampered the functioning of the Secretariat. The Executive Committee of the Centre started looking for a new home for the Secretariat of the Centre.

Professor Sadik Kakac, a member of the Scientific Council representing Turkey, with the encouragement of Professor Yasuo Mori, the President of ICHMT, and Professor Franz Mayinger, the Chairman of the Executive Committee, contacted Professor Kemal Guruz, Head of TUBITAK (Scientific and Technical Reaserach Council of Turkey), and Professor Suha Sevuk, President of METU (Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey), and urged them to prepare a joint proposal. These efforts took more than a year. In September 1992, the proposals from institutions in seven countries were examined at an Executive Committee meeting in Rome, and it was decided, with a majority vote, that the joint proposal of METU and TUBITAK, could provide the best financial and administrative support to the Centre. Since January 1993, the Centre has restarted its activities in its new home, the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, under the joint auspices of these institutions, METU and TUBITAK.
The Statutes and the By-Laws of the Centre were revised, partly in response to the move to Turkey. At the meetings of the General Assembly and of the Scientific Council in Brighton, England in August, 1994, Professor Faruk Arinç, a faculty member at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of METU, was elected as the new Secretary General of the Centre. He was  re-elected to this office at the succeeding Scientific Council meetings held in every four years during International Heat Tranfer Conferences (IHTC).

The new Secretariat working under the new rules with renewed enthusiasm and support of the Executive Committee as well as the two standing sponsors of the Centre in Turkey, organized highly successful meetings since 1994, and sponsored many others elsewhere. The venues of the meetings in Turkey were chosen to be five-star hotels on the Aegean or Mediterranean coast, providing excellent settings for scientific as well as social gathering of all attendees and spouses. ICHMT also organizes meetings in countries other than Turkey, chaired by prominent researchers in the field.

The traditional activity of ICHMT is organization the International Symposia and Seminars. These meetings have been always met with increasing interest by the scientific, technical and industrial communities. The general scope of the meetings has always been designed with the aim of active promotion of interesting scientific work and achievements at high technical levels.

The Centre has published over 80 Proceedings on various specific aspects of heat and mass transfer. Each proceeding is related to a meeting of the Centre. International participation in the meetings is always a major aim. The total number of participants in the meetings of ICHMT since 1968 has been over 5000, coming from over 60 different countries.

In order to promote the international activities of the Centre and reach as many scientists and researchers as possible in the field, the Centre signed a publication agreement with the publisher, Begell House, Inc., in 1994, since when Begell House has been printing and distributing the scientific work of ICHMT. In addition, the Proceedings of the Biotransport-98, Plasma-99, Turbine-2000 and Vim-2001 symposia were published in the Annals of New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS) in accordance with a separate agreement signed between the Centre and the Academy. In June 2006, the agreement between ICHMT and Begell House, Inc. was renewed and expanded to include the creation of an ICHMT Digital Library Online (http://dl.begellhouse.com/references/1bb331655c289a0a.html).


As emphasized in our Mission Statement, the Centre aims not only to provide attractive meeting occasions for all scientists active in the field, but also to foster international exchange of science and engineering in all branches of heat and mass transfer through the promotion of research, education, and the exchange of personnel. With this purpose of existence in mind, the Centre aims to be a reliable and state-of-the-art source of information in all its publications, and to create the means for generating international synergy, enthusiasm, and motivation among the scientists and researchers that will lead to new ideas, procedures, products, and standards to improve productivity and efficiency and to promote living in a cleaner environment.

The membership in the Centre is open to all non-governmental, non-profit, national and international organizations working in the field of heat and mass transfer. The number of member institutions of the Centre is now over 40 from 30 different countries.

One activity initiated by the Secretariat of the Centre in 1994 was the creation of the ICHMT Home Page on the Internet. This site is constantly updated, and has now grown to a significant size. It is being accessed by scientists all over the world.

Elsevier/JQSRT Call for Nominations for the 2016 Poynting Award

We are very pleased to announce that Elsevier issues a Call for Nominations for the 2016 Poynting Award on Thermal Radiative Transfer.

The Award is to celebrate the life-time achievement of an individual scientist who has made a landmark contribution to the research field of radiative transfer and its applications. The Award will be administered by the Editorial Board and Publisher of the Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer. Nominations of scientists of all nationalities and all ages will be considered. The selection committee will consist of two Editors-in-Chief of JQSRT, four Associate Editors of the Journal, and three distinguished members of the radiative transfer community.

On behalf of the Poynting Award Committee, we invite you to nominate a deserving candidate for the 2016 Award. Each nomination (as a single pdf file) must consist of a two page summary of the nominees accomplishments written in narrative format by the nominator, the nominee’s CV and publications list, and at least three 2-page letters of support.

Call for Nominations: The 2015-2016 Elsevier/JQSRT Raymond Viskanta Awards

The Elsevier young-scientist award in the category of Radiative Transfer is named after Professor Raymond Viskanta of Purdue University, Indiana, USA to honor his profound contributions to the field of Radiative Transfer since the late 1950s. He is a W. F. M. Goss Professor Emeritus of Engineering at Purdue and a member of the US National Academy of Engineering. He has written more than 500 papers, has guided more than 85 graduate students, and has influenced many engineers and researchers during his stellar career.

The Viskanta Award will be competed among early-career scientists and engineers who work on the theory and application of radiative transfer (including thermal sciences, atmospheric radiation, optical sciences, near- and far-field radiation transfer, remote sensing or all other relevant areas). Two  Awards will be presented at the 8th International Symposium on Radiative Transfer (RAD’16) which will be held in Cappadocia, Turkey from June 6–11, 2016.

A nominee:

  • Can be an undergraduate, a graduate or a post-graduate student, or in his/her early career path with an outstanding record of scholarship and/or applications;
  • Has not received a JQSRT Young Scientist Award previously;
  • Has published in JQSRT previously, although this requirement may be relaxed in exceptional cases;
  • Must be under 37 years of age on June 1, 2016 and must have finished his/her PhD within the 10 years preceding that date;
  • Must present a paper at RAD’16;
  • Must attend the award ceremony at RAD’16.

The recipients of the award will receive a monetary prize of USD 750 and an official certificate. The winner will be selected by two JQSRT Editors-in-Chief (M.P. Mengüç, M. Mishchenko) and the RAD’16 Chairs (B. Webb, D. Lemonnier), and will be announced during the conference diner.

The complete nomination package of a candidate should be e-mailed to M.P. Mengüç (pinar.menguc@ozyegin.edu.tr) by April 15th, 2016. The package, in the form of a single PDF file, should include a cover letter, a CV, up to three letters of support,  and up to 5 best peer-reviewed journal papers.
